In Changing Face of Beijing, a Look at the New China

July 15th, 2008 · Comments Off

CCTV television headquarters, by Rem Koolhaas

CCTV television headquarters, Rem Koolhaas.

New York Times, In Changing Face of Beijing, a Look at the New China:

“(…) Mr. Koolhaas has set out to express the elasticity of the new global culture, and in the process explore ways architecture can bridge the gap between the intimate scale of the individual life and the whirling tide of mass society. The image of authority he conveys is pointedly ambiguous. Imposing at one moment, shy and retiring the next, the building’s unstable forms say as much about collective anxieties as they do about centralized power.

He has carved out ample space for places of social exchange. The interior of the building is conceived as an endless loop of public activities, with cafes, viewing decks and galleries extending up through one leg of the structure and back down through the other, where it connects to an underground subway.

The architect sees the dividing line between public and private spheres as an active battleground, one that is constantly shifting and readjusting as society’s norms change and evolve. For now, however, it is not the architect who will determine the degree of openness at CCTV but the company’s government-appointed board of directors.”

Eric Clough: The Puzzle Appartment

June 13th, 2008 · Comments Off

Behind a drawing of a plane that hangs in a hallway is a little niche containing a scale model of the kitchen, a clue that leads to a musical score written for the apartment, which is hidden in a drawer above the stove.

‘Behind a drawing of a plane that hangs in a hallway is a little niche containing a scale model of the kitchen, a clue that leads to a musical score written for the apartment, which is hidden in a drawer above the stove.’ (Slideshow)

New York Times, Mystery on Fifth Avenue:

“(…) But some of that furniture and some of those walls conceal secrets — messages, games and treasures — that make up a Rube Goldberg maze of systems and contraptions conceived by a young architectural designer named Eric Clough, whose ideas about space and domestic living derive more from Buckminster Fuller than Peter Marino.

The apartment even comes with its own book, part of which is a fictional narrative that recalls “The Da Vinci Code” (without the funky religion or buckets of blood) and “From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler,” the children’s classic by E. L. Konigsburg about a brother and a sister who run away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and discover — and solve — a mystery surrounding a Renaissance sculpture. It has its own soundtrack, too, with contributions by Kate Fenner, a young Canadian singer and songwriter with a lusty, alternative, Joni Mitchell-ish sound, with whom Mr. Clough fell in love during the project.”

Over elk detail is nagedacht. (vet – hvi)

When living in mega-cities was considered a privilege

Dark Roasted Blend, Retro-Future: Glorious Urbanism:

“That gleaming Metropolis on the horizon? – Something to aspire to, the glorious destination to dream about, to shape your life accordingly and reach it as the utmost reward… Such ideas were popular in the infant days of futurism, in fantastic literature on both sides of the Atlantic.

Thankfully the “mega-urbanism” dream is replaced today by quite the opposite idea of an affluent living in the country – but frankly, both seem to be unattainable, clean-cut ideals that’s only pretty to look at. And look at them we will – presenting again the rarely-seen examples of urbanism and architecture, some from the Eastern Bloc “popular science” publications and promotional literature.”

New York Times Building

NY Times Building, Renzo Piano
The Guardian, The power of the tower:

“The decline of the New York skyscraper – caused by a leaking away of creative steam from the 1960s and a planning system that increasingly stifled fresh architectural ideas – seemed signed and sealed on 9/11. Yet, just a year before the terrorist attack, the Times Company commissioned Renzo Piano to design what may be the beginning of a return to skyscraper form. Officially opened last week, the New York Times Building is the first truly impressive office tower raised in Manhattan in more than 40 years.”

Teun Koolhaas (1940-2007)

October 4th, 2007 · Comments Off

NRC:
